What can a LINE Bot and LIFF do for a local business? 5 common uses

From bookings and member points to order updates: five common ways shops use a LINE Bot and LIFF, and what to check before you build one.

Messaging API(LINE Bot)

LIFF(LINE Front-end Framework)

In Taiwan, LINE is the messaging app most people open every day, and many shops already run a LINE Official Account. Yet most accounts are still used for two things: broadcasting promotions and answering messages by hand. With the Messaging API and LIFF, LINE can become the front door for bookings, memberships and notifications, without asking customers to install an app or remember a URL. Here are five common uses for local businesses, and what to think about before you start.

First: Official Account, LINE Bot and LIFF

Built-in Official Account features

An Official Account already includes broadcasts, keyword auto-replies, rich menus, coupons and reward cards. You set them up in the admin console, no code required.

The Messaging API (a LINE Bot)

The Messaging API lets your own system receive customer messages and reply automatically, and push notifications based on each customer's status, such as an order shipping or a booking reminder. This is what people usually mean by a LINE Bot.

LIFF (LINE Front-end Framework)

LIFF apps are web apps that open inside LINE. A tap on the rich menu opens a booking page, member card or form without leaving the chat, and with the customer's consent the app can use their LINE identity, so there is no separate sign-up or login.

Use 1: Online bookings

A great fit for salons, nail studios, clinics, classes and restaurants. Customers pick a service, date and time inside LINE, the system checks availability in real time, sends a confirmation, and a reminder the day before. Staff see every booking in one place, optionally synced with Google Calendar. Compared with going back and forth by phone or chat, it saves time on both sides.

Before building bookings, settle a few rules: how long each service takes, how slots work across staff or seats, how late a customer can cancel or reschedule, and whether you take a deposit. The clearer the rules, the more the system can handle on its own without staff judging each case. If you already use another booking system, consider connecting to it rather than building a new one.

Use 2: Member cards and points

A LIFF member card links the customer on first open; after that they can show a member barcode, check points and see purchase history right in LINE. Unlike the built-in reward card, a custom membership system can connect to your POS or e-commerce back office and gives you more freedom over point rules, tiers and reporting. If the built-in reward card does the job, you may not need custom work at all.

Keep the linking step short, too. Customers have limited patience for extra fields, so ask only for what is essential on first open and collect anything else when you actually need it.

Use 3: Order and booking status updates

Order confirmed, shipped, delivered; a booking about to start or rescheduled: each can trigger a LINE message automatically, and a LINE message is usually more likely to be seen than an email. This means connecting the bot to your order or booking system so that every data change fires a message, the same thinking behind our workflow automation work.

Use 4: FAQ auto-replies with a hand-off to a person

Opening hours, address, parking, prices and return policies are repetitive questions a bot can answer well. Add AI and it can understand questions phrased in the customer's own words and find the answer in material you provide. The key is the hand-off: when the bot is unsure, the customer is upset, or the question concerns a specific order, a colleague should take over instead of leaving the customer stuck in auto-replies.

When AI writes the replies, keep its answers within the material you provide, such as your price list, FAQ and house rules, and update it whenever that material changes. For questions the material doesn't cover, it is better for the bot to say "Let me ask a colleague to reply" than to guess. Customers get a better experience and you avoid misunderstandings caused by wrong answers.

Use 5: Forms, surveys and promotions

Sign-up forms, satisfaction surveys, warranty registration and prize draws can all be LIFF pages with the customer's LINE identity filled in, so there are fewer fields to type. Responses can go straight into a spreadsheet or CRM, and follow-up messages or coupons can vary by answer.

Pages like these are usually quick to build, which makes them a good first project: watch how customers use them, then decide whether to extend into bookings or memberships.

What to consider before you start

  • Message limits and plans: push messages from an Official Account are subject to quotas and fees, and LINE revises its plans from time to time. Check LINE's official, current plan and pricing pages before planning your notification volume; replies to messages customers send you are counted differently from pushes, so design with both in mind.
  • Personal data and consent: if you collect a customer's LINE identity, phone number or birthday, explain why, get consent, follow Taiwan's Personal Data Protection Act, and collect only what you need.
  • Keep people in the loop: automation should free your staff for work that needs judgement, not replace customer service entirely.
  • Maintenance: LINE's platform rules and APIs change, so someone needs to monitor and adjust things after launch.

When you don't need custom development

If all you need is promotional broadcasts, a few keyword replies and a rich menu linking to your website, the built-in features are enough and there is nothing to build. LINE Bot and LIFF development makes sense when you need to do something different for each customer based on their data: look up their own order, book a specific slot, or collect points that stay in sync with your system.

Wrapping up

The value of a LINE Bot and LIFF is turning a tool your customers already use into the entrance to your service. Start with the one situation that generates the most questions or takes the most staff time, such as bookings or order lookups, then expand from there.
